Matsukaze
Materials: handblown glass, electrodes, xenon gas
Dimensions: 20" x 7“
Matsukaze was made during an artist residency at Urban Glass New York, 2009.
Matsukaze is a hand blown glass tube that contains a little universe. Matsukaze means "wind passing through a pine forest " in Japanese. Within the tubes, sparkling rays of light are constantly produced, they appear and disappear. Ever changing sound is created by the collision of light particles. The pattern of the light and it's strength changes depending on the electric voltage, Thus Matsukaze becomes light /sound instrument. Because this sound reminds me of the sound of pine forest, I named this piece Matsukaze. Pine trees live thousands of years; they exist beyond human time. Thus I believe that space created by Matsukaze belongs to limitless time and space.
